A Lesson on Trust from the Pasture

May 19, 2020May 19, 2020 Rachel Latson2 Comments

I love going to the barn during ‘nap time’ in the middle of the afternoon on a cool winter day when the horses are basking in the warmth of the sun. I enjoy joining them in rest by sitting down next to my horse often on those types of days and usually whatever my ‘plan’ [...]

What I’ve Learned About Positive Reinforcement (so far)

January 20, 2020 Rachel LatsonLeave a comment

When Leanne came to me with the idea of starting a blog together I was a little overwhelmed. While I have learned so much about horses and humans in my years on this planet I also feel that I have so much to learn. After thinking and talking it out we decided to go ahead [...]

Am I Enough for My Horse?

November 25, 2019November 25, 2019 Rachel LatsonLeave a comment

September 30, 2019September 30, 2019 Rachel LatsonLeave a comment

Recently I have been working with a fellow boarder’s horse since she is limited on time. The horse, D, spent some time alone before moving to this barn and at some point, in his past, a pasture mate passed away as well, a recent story of a mother orca carrying her dead infant has been [...]

Thoughts on Grooming From The Pasture

September 4, 2019September 4, 2019 Rachel LatsonLeave a comment

The other day I spent some time watching the horses. I watch them often but today when I went to the farm my only intention was to observe the herd. I treated it like a walking meditation, observing the horses and observing myself. When I had questions or what I perceived as negative thoughts I [...]

Do Labels Shape Our Relationships?

August 19, 2019August 19, 2019 Rachel LatsonLeave a comment

He’s difficult, she’s stubborn, he doesn’t listen, she’s naughty, he’s impatient. You could overhear sentiments like these about horses at any farm, or even taking it out of the context of horses, anywhere.  You’ve probably also said them yourself. I know I have. I don’t believe that labels are always inherently bad, even ones we [...]

Not Riding My Horse Has Changed Me

August 5, 2019August 5, 2019 Rachel Latson2 Comments

When I tell people I don’t ride my horse, I get mixed reactions.  I remember a time not that long ago when I thought that having a horse you can’t or don’t ride seemed like a waste. Isn’t that their sole purpose and duty, to be ridden? Don’t horses ‘need a job’ or need to [...]

We couldn’t agree with @mustangmaddy more, it’s not easy to show up for someone else when you haven’t first looked inside. Reading for fun and for education can be a wonderful tool for introspection. How do you honor and take care of your self?
Today’s blog is a republished version of our friend @camilouwhooo recent Facebook post where she uses her understanding of Natural Lifemanship and her experience working with trauma informed EAP at @corralriding to explain why our country is seeing one of the largest uprisings over racial inequality and violence sparked by the public murder of #GeorgeFloyd

Being at the beginning of a new journey with our horses can seem daunting. This quote from Alexandra Kurland is a helpful reminder that no matter where we begin we can always look to our horse for guidance, they will show us the way.
